Rhetorical Text-3

My argument was on parents who speak broken English and just trying to spread awareness on the issue. I chose to talk about parents who speak broken English because it is a topic that I can relate to a lot. My intended audience is pretty much anyone because my goal was to show people just a little bit of what family’s go through when learning the English language. I chose a YouTube video as my genre because I feel like watching people speak with their tones and emotion would convey a more powerful message.

I used the rhetorical strategy of pathos to emotionally convey message. I also used pathos to enhance my points. My purpose for using pathos was to share the feelings of people who had tough experiences, as well as sharing a few experiences of my own. Using emotion in this case is a great way to express what people have felt due to a very common issue amongst non-English speakers. Hearing how some people sound sad or even cry while talking about their experiences will show the audience just how much of an issue this was to deal with. Especially since most of their experiences were as a child. With this issue there are many examples that all connect to one point. There are many ways in how people have experienced issues with broken English. Using multiple points that all connect to one issue just comes to show that there is a wide range of experiences people have gone through.

Another rhetorical strategy I used would be comparing and contrasting. I only compared my experiences with the speakers because I pretty much related to all of them except assault. This just comes to show how relatable problems people who have with non-English speaking parents. The only contrast I would have would be the assault cases and although it happens, I don’t think it is a common issue that people go through. My purpose for using this rhetorical strategy is to add onto my pathos strategy by sharing my story on dealing with the police officers. By sharing a different story, it contrasts those talked in the video, but it also is a surprising story because a child shouldn’t be woken up to translate for a serious situation that is happening. Using comparing and contrasting I appealed to my audience by sharing both similar and different situations I have gone through as well as sharing those of the speakers.
